Nelson

The Nelson and Marlborough regions are situated in the northern south Island.  This is a region of contrasts.  The east is exceedingly dry and experiences over 2000 hours of sunshine a year, while the west is a land of lush rainforest.

Nelson city, with the region of Nelson, has a population of 33,000.  Nelson is the largest fruit growing region in New Zealand and supplies the nation's tobacco and hops.  Quality studios, art and craft shops abound in the city and district.  The region has glorious beaches and forests.  National Parks in the area include the maritime Abel Tasman National Park (refer to Nelson a la carte for more details) and Nelson Lakes National Park.
